Toad in a Hole
Classic comfort food with an egg fried in the center of a piece of bread. Also known as 'egg in a basket,' this simple yet satisfying dish combines crispy toast with a perfectly cooked egg.
Ingredients
- 1Large Egg1 large egg
- 2Bread1 thick slice of bread (white, sourdough, or whole wheat)
- 3Butter2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 4SaltPinch of salt
- 5Black PepperFreshly ground black pepper to taste
- 6Cheese2 tablespoons grated cheese (optional)
Instructions
- 1
Using a round cookie cutter, glass, or knife, cut a hole about 2-3 inches in diameter in the center of the bread slice. Save the cut-out piece.
- 2
Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a non-stick skillet over medium heat until melted and foaming.
- 3
Place the bread slice in the skillet and toast for 1-2 minutes until the bottom is golden brown.
- 4
Add the remaining butter to the pan and flip the bread over, making sure butter gets under the bread and in the hole.
- 5
Crack the egg directly into the hole in the bread, being careful not to break the yolk.
- 6
Cook for 2-3 minutes until the egg white begins to set and the bread is golden on the bottom.
- 7
Season the egg with salt and pepper. Add cheese around the egg if desired.
- 8
Continue cooking until the egg white is completely set but the yolk remains runny, about 1-2 more minutes.
- 9
Toast the cut-out bread piece alongside for dipping. Serve immediately while hot.
