Prairie Oyster (Hangover Cure)

Prairie Oyster (Hangover Cure)

The Prairie Oyster is a classic, often non-alcoholic, 'hair of the dog' remedy traditionally used to combat hangovers. It typically consists of a raw egg yolk served in a glass with Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, salt, and pepper, meant to be swallowed in one gulp. The unbroken yolk provides a unique texture reminiscent of an actual oyster.

Ingredients

  • 1
    Large Egg
1 large fresh egg yolk (ensure egg is very fresh for safety)
  • 2
    Worcestershire Sauce
    1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 3
    Hot Sauce
2-3 dashes hot sauce (e.g., Tabasco or Cholula), or to taste
  • 4
    Salt
    Pinch of salt
  • 5
    Black Pepper
Pinch of freshly ground black pepper
  • 6
    Optional: Tomato Juice
1-2 ounces tomato juice (for a Bloody Mary-like variation)
  • 7
    Optional: White Wine Vinegar
    1/2 teaspoon white wine vinegar
  • 8
    Optional: Brandy or Vodka
1 ounce brandy or vodka (for an alcoholic version)

Instructions

  1. 1

Carefully crack the egg and separate the yolk from the white. The goal is to keep the yolk completely intact. Gently place the whole egg yolk into the bottom of an old-fashioned glass or shot glass.

  2. 2

Carefully add the Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, a pinch of salt, and a pinch of black pepper around the egg yolk. If using, also add tomato juice or white wine vinegar.

  3. 3

If making an alcoholic version, gently pour the brandy or vodka into the glass.

  4. 4

**Important:** Do NOT stir or break the yolk. The Prairie Oyster is meant to be consumed in one swift gulp, allowing the unbroken yolk to provide its unique texture as it goes down.

  5. 5

Serve immediately. This drink is typically consumed as a quick shot or 'pick-me-up'.
